History and origin

Indian Red Cross Society is Non-religious Non-governmental Non-political international humanitarian organization. Indian Red Cross Society was established and incorporated under the Parliament Act XV of 1920 (Amended by Act No. 22 of 1956 and the Adaption of Law (No 4) order of 1957 and the Act. No. 14 of 1992).

Indian Red Cross Society is a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and is recognized by the International Committee of Red Cross. It has wide network of over 700 branches providing disaster relief, health and social welfare programs in India. Honorable President of India is the president, Honorable Prime Mister is the Vice President and Honorable Health Minister is the Chairman of IRCS.

Gujarat State Branch of Indian Red Cross Society came into existence in the year 1960 where Governor of State is the President and State Health Minister is the Vice President of the State Branch. There are 23 District and 46 Sub District Branch of Gujarat State Branch.

In Vadodara, Indian Red Cross Society is established in 1925 by Late Sir Sayajirao Gayakawad. Vadodara Municipal Corporation provided land to Indian Red Cross Society, Vadodara in 1959 where Red Cross Building was established with the generous donation of Rs. 10,000.00 by Shree Mustak M. Hakim. Later this building was known as G. N. Hakim Red Cross Building and adjacent road was named Red Cross Road.

History

A battle ground of Solferino inspired the idea of The Red Cross where Italy and Austria fought bloody battle in 1859. Henry Dunant, a Swiss Businessman provided first aid to some 40,000 wounded soldiers with the help of local people. After returning to Geneva, he wrote a book “Memories of Solferino”. This book highlighted impartiality to the people who come forward for help to wounded soldiers, their protection against war and to established neutral body for wounded people at the time of war in every country.
The Red Cross was established in international Committee in 1963. The emblem of Red Cross was adopted by 12 countries in first Geneva Convention. Within 10 years, Red Cross was established in 22 countries which further grown to 150 countries in 1991.
