Major Objectives:
(A)
To organize activities so as to create education and awareness about Thalassemia & Sickle Cell amongst various sections of Community at Vadodara.
(B)
To make community aware about the problem of Thalassemia & Sickle Cell Anemia. Both are incurable but preventable. Blood Examination of both partners can avoid marriage between two Pre Thalessemics (carriers) and Sickle cell Trait (carriers) so that they don’t give birth to Thalassemia Major and Sickle Cell disease child, which is a burden to the family & Society.
(C)
To identify prospective Thalassemia & Sickle Cell individuals by scientific screening methods and educate them about the same.
Methodology:
The organization would be approaching various sections of Vulnerable community groups like young boys & girls of School, College students, pregnant women and screen them for the genetic trait of Thalassemia. On detection of any Thalassemic individuals, they would be counseled and educated about the preventive aspects of Thalassemia. Thalassemia major, Intermedia patient identified and registered would be given special focus and all efforts taken to support them in getting Blood transfusion at our blood transfusion center, drugs, laboratory test etc.
Need Assessment Tools and data:
Beta Thalassemia is a major hemoglobin disorders in India and leads to several clinical manifestations. A Thalassemia Child takes away the pleasure and peace of a family as the child requires frequent blood transfusions every month. Beta Thalassemia has been reported in certain population groups like Sindhis, Punjabis, Jains, Bhanushalis, Bohras and certain scheduled castes groups. Beta Thalassemia Prevalence varied from 1 to 17 % in these communities. The overall prevalence of this Genetic Disorder is 3 to 4 % in India and about 10000 babies are born with Thalassemia Major every year. Gujarat is one of the states in India with a high frequency of carriers of Beta Thalassemia i.e. 5 to 10 % Vadodara District too has a great Vulnerability for having a large number of Thalassemia minor individuals.
Justification for Support:
The association has initiated and established a Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society under its auspices. It has been coordinating and working with the Gujarat State Branch of Indian Red Cross Society since last few years. To have sustainability in this community needed programme. The association seeks support for executing various components of the programme like screening of population, parental diagnosis, counseling and organizing blood transfusions.
