Need Assessment Tools and data:

Beta Thalassemia is a major hemoglobin disorders in India and leads to several clinical manifestations. A Thalassemia Child takes away the pleasure and peace of a family as the child requires frequent blood transfusions every month. Beta Thalassemia has been reported in certain population groups like Sindhis, Punjabis, Jains, Bhanushalis, Bohras and certain scheduled castes groups. Beta Thalassemia Prevalence varied from 1 to 17 % in these communities. The overall prevalence of this Genetic Disorder is 3 to 4 % in India and about 10000 babies are born with Thalassemia Major every year. Gujarat is one of the states in India with a high frequency of carriers of Beta Thalassemia i.e. 5 to 10 % Vadodara District too has a great Vulnerability for having a large number of Thalassemia minor individuals.

Justification for Support:

The association has initiated and established a Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society under its auspices. It has been coordinating and working with the Gujarat State Branch of Indian Red Cross Society since last few years. To have sustainability in this community needed programme. The association seeks support for executing various components of the programme like screening of population, parental diagnosis, counseling and organizing blood transfusions.
